Last year, Sérgio translated A Killing Art from English to Portuguese (Uma Arte Mortal: A História Não Contada do Tae Kwon Do), adding seven chapters to it about the art in Brazil. He represents everything that’s great about Olympic Taekwondo. He’s a 6th degree black belt who’s been practicing the sport for more than 20 years, after starting with the World Taekwondo Federation (now known as World Taekwondo, or WT).
I love talking to Sergio about martial arts, as he’s a great researcher of the history and philosophy of Taekwondo, and he’s a man of high integrity. He graduated in physical education from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and is head of the Oriente Academia (a martial arts gym) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He has 70 books about our martial art.
The seven new chapters he researched and wrote for the Brazilian edition involved immersing himself in the intense and bizarre history of Brazilian Taekwondo, a history similar in its ups and downs to histories in Canada, Australia, Germany, Argentina and other countries. He reveals not only important and unknown facts about the martial art in his home country, but brings Brazil’s culture, politics, espionage missions and social challenges into the stories.
