A member of MartialTalk.com recently told me about a great essay by Eric Madis, a senior martial arts instructor in the U.S. who trained in Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do and Aikido. Madis “links the origins of taekwondo to twentieth-century Shotokan, Shudokan, and Shito-ryu karate and shows how the revised history was developed to support South Korean nationalism.”

I studied Karate for a while and was surprised at how rigid and powerful it was. During sparring in that gym, even the fifth- and fourth-dan black belts moved like trucks. If they hit you, then you were finished, but, between attempts, they were tense. Maybe that was the style practiced in my neighbourhood only? There are as many styles of Karate as there are of Tae Kwon Do. Last month, my instructor, Mr. Di Vecchia, found an old, Karate video that depicts a more fluid version of the art...

A couple of months ago, an extremely cranky master from the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) shot an email to me stating that former South Korean General Choi Hong Hi was “not the founder of Taekwondo, even though he fancied himself as such.
